A South & North Coast Kenya Escape
The Journey
Kenya's coastline is one of the Indian Ocean's best-kept secrets — a 480-kilometre arc of white coral beaches, ancient Swahili towns, turquoise lagoons, and warm trade winds. Relax & Unwind takes you from the legendary white sands of Diani on the south coast, through the vibrant port of Mombasa, to the timeless island labyrinth of Lamu — where the 20th century never quite arrived. Five days. No schedule. Pure coastal bliss.

Your Itinerary
Day 1 Photo — Diani Arrival
Recommended: Diani beach · palm-lined shore · turquoise lagoon
Fly in to Ukunda Airstrip — just ten minutes from the beachfront — or arrive by road from Mombasa via the Likoni Ferry, crossing the old port channel as dhows drift past in the afternoon light. Diani Beach stretches some 17km of unbroken powdery white coral sand, sheltered by a barrier reef that keeps the Indian Ocean warm, clear, and calm. Check in to your chosen retreat, change into something easy, and let the trade winds do the rest. This afternoon is yours entirely — your first swim in the Indian Ocean, a sundowner coconut cocktail on the beach, and a fresh Swahili seafood dinner as the stars appear over the lagoon.

Day 2 Photo — Diani Activities
Recommended: Snorkelling reef · Kayak · Sunset dhow · Pool
A full unhurried day on the south coast. The morning is perfect for a snorkelling excursion over the barrier reef — the coral gardens and fish life are extraordinary at low tide. For the adventurous, a half-day PADI scuba introduction dive can be arranged with the on-site diving centre. Alternatively, explore the coast by kayak through the shallow mangrove creeks north of Diani, or join a traditional outrigger fishing boat for a sunrise sail. Midday: poolside, a cold Tusker, and the kind of deep relaxation that only the equatorial coast can deliver. This afternoon, a beach massage under the casuarina trees, followed by a sundowner walk and dinner at the hotel restaurant or at one of Diani's excellent independent restaurants.
Day 3 · Mombasa · Kenya's Oldest City · Ocean Door to the World
Day 3 Photo — Mombasa
Recommended: Fort Jesus · Old Town streets · Shanzu beach
A short transfer north of Diani brings you to Kenya's historic port city — one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on the East African coast, with roots tracing to the 9th century. Begin with a morning guided walk through Mombasa Old Town's labyrinthine coral stone streets: intricately carved Swahili doors, crumbling Omani mansions, spice market aromas, and the UNESCO-listed Fort Jesus overlooking the dhow harbour. Lunch at a traditional Swahili restaurant on the waterfront before checking in to your north-coast beachfront hotel — grand properties on the palm-fringed Shanzu and Bamburi beaches of the north coast. This evening, swim in the ocean or pool before a sundowner and a long, leisurely dinner.

Day 4 Photo — Lamu Arrival
Recommended: Lamu harbour · Old Town alleys · Dhows at anchor
A short charter flight from Mombasa deposits you into one of the Indian Ocean's most extraordinary places. Lamu is Kenya's oldest living town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the 7th-century Swahili civilisation still breathes through the carved coral-stone architecture, the sea-salt air, and the rhythmic creak of dhow rigging. No motor vehicles exist on Lamu Island. Transport is by donkey, dhow, or bare feet. Transfer by motorboat from the airstrip to your retreat — a short, unforgettable crossing past the old dhow harbour. This afternoon: wander the narrow lanes of Lamu Old Town, visit the 18th-century Riyadha Mosque, browse the Lamu Museum, and find a rooftop café for a spiced coffee at sunset. Dinner is a Swahili feast on the terrace.

Lamu House Hotel
Day 5 Photo — Lamu Farewell
Recommended: Sunrise dhow · Shela Beach · Ocean view breakfast
Rise before the heat and take a sunrise dhow sail from Shela beach — the sky turns amber-pink over the dunes as dhows drift quietly on the outgoing tide. Return for a long breakfast on your terrace: fresh tropical fruit, Swahili mandazi, and strong coastal chai while the town stirs below. The morning is yours for one last walk through the alleyways — a final browse at the curio shops for hand-carved wood, silver jewellery, and kikoi textiles. Optional: a half-day snorkelling trip to Kinyika Coral Island with Kizingo (USD 65/pax) or a final massage at the lodge. Early afternoon: motorboat transfer back to Manda Airstrip for your return flight to Nairobi.
