Elephants silhouetted against Kilimanjaro. Hippos floating in crystal springs beneath a lava plain. Red-dusted giants at the Aruba Dam. Kenya's great southern circuit in six unforgettable days — all by road, all without a flight.
Most visitors choose between Amboseli and Tsavo. This circuit gives you both — and adds Tsavo West's volcanic drama in between. Each park is a completely different landscape and ecosystem, each one worth a dedicated trip in its own right.
Days 2–3
Home to Africa's largest free-roaming elephant herds and the most iconic wildlife photography backdrop on earth — Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli's open, dusty plains allow unobstructed views of elephants, lions, cheetahs, wildebeest and over 400 bird species.
The volcanic drama of Kenya's landscape is on full display in Tsavo West — ancient lava flows, the Shetani lava field, and the miraculous Mzima Springs where millions of litres of filtered volcanic water emerge daily, supporting hippos, crocodiles and shoals of barbel fish visible through an underwater viewing chamber.
Day 5
Tsavo East is Kenya's largest national park — a vast, flat wilderness of red ochre dust that coats the legendary "red elephants" who roll in the iron-rich soil. The Aruba Dam is a gravity well for wildlife: elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, crocodile and hundreds of bird species congregate here at every hour of the day.
All travel is by road from Nairobi. The circuit is designed to flow naturally south and east — avoiding backtracking and maximising the time you spend in each park, not driving to it.

All add-ons bookable at the time of enquiry. The Amboseli balloon at dawn — with Kilimanjaro lit pink and elephants moving below — is one of the great travel experiences on earth.
Amboseli at dawn from the air. Mount Kilimanjaro glowing in first light, elephants moving below you in silence. Followed by a champagne bush breakfast in the African morning. Available at most Amboseli camps.
Visit a traditional Maasai boma near Amboseli. Meet the community, watch traditional dances, learn about the warrior culture and purchase handmade beadwork directly from the women who make it.
More time at the underground viewing chamber watching hippos walk weightlessly through crystal water, barbel fish drift past, and crocodiles bask in the shallows. An experience unlike anywhere else in Kenya.
Hike the ancient Chaimu Crater — a walk across a lava field with panoramic views across the Tsavo plains. A dramatic geological experience that requires no extra cost, just good walking shoes.
"Watching the sun rise over Kilimanjaro from the Tulia camp veranda, with two hundred elephants moving through the morning mist below — I have run out of words. Photographs cannot hold it."
"Mzima Springs broke my brain. I was standing underground watching a hippo walk three metres in front of me through glass, underwater. Nothing in thirty years of travel has been more surreal."
"The 'red elephants' of Tsavo East are genuinely different from any elephant I've seen — bigger, wilder, more ancient-looking, dusted entirely in this impossible red ochre. And the Aruba Dam at dusk with a hundred of them at once..."
